Description

Askja No2 is a rare spectacle of rhyolitic composition. It displays a fine-grained matrix of quartz and feldspar, typical of rhyolite, with the unexpected presence of purplish hues suggesting a complex mineralogy possibly influenced by trace elements or secondary mineral inclusions. The dominant gray and white background are beautifully intersected by a network of gold to brown veins, characteristic of iron oxide staining, which occurs as groundwater percolates through the rock’s fissures. These striking color variations and patterns are the direct result of the rock’s cooling history and post-emplacement chemical alterations.
